(Threat of) Violence from Strangers, Peers, and Family Members
-
A 1998 survey of 500 college students in San Francisco found that 24% of respondents (32% of young men in the study) acknowledged that they had engaged in verbal harassment of LGBT individuals.
- 10% (18% of young men) reported that they had made threats or committed actual physical violence against one or more LGBTQ individuals.
- Of the 2 637 offenders associated with incidents against LGBTQ individuals reported to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP), those under the age of 18 represented 20% of all offenders whose age was known.
- Those aged 18 – 29 comprised 37% of offenders with known ages.
- Perhaps most troubling, the number of offenders under the age of 14 rose 200% between 2003 and 2004 (Patton, 2005).
- In the NCAVP report, 44% of offenders were strangers in reports where relationship information between victim and offenders was available.
- 35% of the offenders had a prior relationship to their victim.
- Within that, there was a 56% increase in victimization by friends or acquaintances; and a 19% increase in victimization by individuals related to the victim (Patton, 2005).
