Vision Statement for the OK2BME ProgramVision Statement for the OK2BME Program

Our Vision is of a community that is open, inclusive, and respectful of children and youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or who are questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity. This is a community that:

  • Is aware of the underlying factors which lead to potential oppression and marginalization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) children and youth. In particular, the community recognizes homophobia and heterosexism, and is willing to actively speak out against and responsively attend to manifestations of such phenomena.
  • Has committed to forming alliances and networks aimed at attending to the oppression and marginalization of LGBTQ children and youth.
  • Makes available sensitive, non-judgmental, community-based personnel with specific expertise related to LGBTQ children and youth issues who can help them develop and acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to navigate the potential stresses of daily living.
  • Supports children and youth who identify as LGBTQ so that they are not desperate for understanding and love; do not suffer from unbearable loneliness, isolation, and fear; and, are not at risk of homelessness, serious mental health problems, or suicide.
